Oh, don't pretend like you don't have one!
Are you into poppin' tags? I am. I’m also into Ben Haggerty, known by his stage name, Macklemore, who is a rapper after my own heart.
His music is refreshing, with hits such as “Same Love,” which expresses his support of gay rights. But while his music drew my interest, his style absolutely solidified my new obsession.
With a strong vibe of indie-meets-urban and a signature hairstyle, Macklemore is the perfect unconventional beauty muse.
Taking inspirations from dudes might seem strange, but it allows for a lot of creative interpretation. I wanted to capture the edgy, confident aura he naturally exudes.
Long before I wrote this, I tried out his look for fun after watching the “Thrift Shop” video and being inspired by his huge coat. I recreated a shot from the video to see if I could pull of his look.
The result? I can totally pop tags.
Macklemore doesn’t wear makeup (that we know of), but he’s got a very signature look. Pale skin, light hair, and eyes that pop.
I prepped my skin with Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer. After letting it set for 15 minutes, I began my foundation routine: hitting my under eye circles with Smashbox High Definition Concealer and following up with Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer.
Since Macklemore's skin tone is close to mine, I simply finished with Tarte Smooth Operator Powder with a large powder brush.
Macklemore’s working with some pretty strong bone structure. Luckily, I have a naturally sharp face, but I still wanted to define my cheekbones for a more masculine look. I swept some brown eyeshadow underneath my cheekbones for optimal dude-like shadows and followed up with a light brush of Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush on the tops of my cheekbones.
Eyebrows are the windowsills to your soul, sort of. While I usually prefer a strong arch, my favorite rapper is working with thicker, straighter eyebrows. Since he has light hair, I used the blonde shade of Too Faced Brownies eyebrow pencil.
Since my eyes don't stand out as much as his, I went with a subtle cateye look with Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner and finished with three coats of mascara. Creative interpretation, guys.
To complete the look, I dusted a sheer pink eyeshadow over my lips.
My hairstyle wasn’t actually based off Macklemore, but we’re unintentionally twinsies now.
I wet the front of my bangs and used a round brush and blow-dryer to style them back into a pompadour shape.
His hair is shorter than mine, so I used clear clips and bobby pins to secure my hair back to give the illusion of shorter hair.
If you don’t want to run off and shave most of your head, use bobby pins to trick people. White lies are OK when you look this good.
Finish with hairspray.
Macklemore has got undeniable style. I searched through my closet and ultimately settled on this vest I bought three winters ago, because I was really into metallic-inspired pieces. He seems to favor sleeveless things: tanks, vest, etc.
To complete the look, I grabbed my sunglasses, which luckily were similar to some I’d seen him rocking in photos.
With my shiny vest and new look, I posed in true Macklemore fashion for the camera.
What do you think? Have any dudes inspired one of your beauty looks?
