Oh, don't pretend like you don't have one!
A lot of really fantastic people were born in September. Take our very own Alle and Mari, for starters, who share the same birthday (the 11th). Then there are loads of other awesome folks who celebrate this time of year, like Chrissie Hynde (the 7th), Fiona Apple (the 13th), Amy Poehler (the 16th), Bill Murray and Leonard Cohen (the 21st), Anna Karina and Joan Jett (the 22nd), Bruce Springsteen (the 23rd), and on the 30th we've got Truman Capote, Marc Bolan, Monica Bellucci and, ahem, me. You know, just to name a few. PHEW.
Not only do I enjoy sharing a birthday month with such good company, I also love that our birthstone is the gorgeous sapphire. I've always been cuckoo for anything deep blue, and the passion intensifies even further when it comes to beauty. My collection is full of midnight blue nail polishes and eyeliners ranging from cobalt to navy, and even my eyelash curler has a bold blue handle. If you're also a September baby, or simply love the sapphire for its beauty, then read on for suggestions about how you can incorporate the blue hue into your beauty routine.
For my sapphire manicure, I chose to feature shades all along the glittering spectrum. From a deep but shimmer-free blue on my pinkie and thumb (Revlon Nail Enamel in Urban) to a sapphire with a hint of shine on my middle finger (MAC Studio Nail Lacquer in Midnight Ocean, from the A Novel Romance collection) to all-out crushed-gemstone glitter on my ring and index finger (Hard Candy Itzy Glitzy Nails Micro Glitter Nail Polish in Bitty Blue)
For an added touch of birthstone glamour, I used nail glue to apply a flat-back blue stone near the cuticle of my middle finger. You can find similar stones in craft stores, or online here.
Sapphire Eyes & Spritz
I started by applying a base of OCC Crème Colour Concentrate in Melody, a bright, true blue, with a flat eye shadow brush, blending up and outward.
I then used a long-bristled fluffy shadow brush to apply OCC Loose Colour Concentrate in Distortion, a shimmery charcoal-blue. I brushed the color on in a circular motion, focusing on the outer edges of the crease.
Finally, I used a stiff-bristled, angled liner brush to create a sharp cat-eye using NARS Eye Paint in Ubangi, a black with a heavy dose of blue shimmer. I applied the product all along the upper lash line, flicking up and out at the outer corner, and along the outer two-thirds of the lower lash line, smudging slightly. A coat of mascara finished the look.
If splashing sapphire blue on your eyes or nails isn't your bag, but you still want to have a piece of September's birthstone in your beauty world, grab a bottle of Dior Addict Eau de Parfum. The scent, with orange blossom, Bulgarian rose, bourbon vanilla, and tonic bean, is housed in a sapphire blue bottle (reminiscent of the brand's iconic makeup packaging) with gold accents, looking itself like a precious gem perched on your vanity.
Are you as obsessed with your birthstone as I am? How do you hint at it with your beauty routine?
