Birchbox: How To Feel Like A Beauty Editor Without Switching Careers

The Birchbox 360-degree process--try, learn, buy--is pretty much exactly what I do for a living.

There's really no way to say this without it coming across as an obnoxious brag: I get A LOT of beauty samples. I can send an email asking for a product, and within a few hours, it's delivered right to my desk. Sometimes stuff just shows up unsolicitedly. It's a really awesome part of my job, and I can understand why friends have told me they're envious of such a perk. I mean, I feel a little jealousy when Annie gets something and I don't!

OK, so here's why: For $10 a month--kind of almost free--you get a box of deluxe beauty samples in the mail, letting you try the products we editor types won't shut up about before deciding whether or not you want to buy the full-size versions, which--hello, convenience--are available in the Birchbox online shop.

After you join, you get customized samples each month that the Birchbox staff has tried themselves--stuff from beauty brands you've already heard of, and up-and-comers that deserve your attention.

The Content

Their original content helps you get the most out of your samples. There are interviews, videos, editor tips, etc., in the box itself, on the site, and on their social media feeds.

The Shop

When you've figured out what you love, you can purchase full-size versions directly from the Birchbox shop. They even have a loyalty program that rewards you every time you buy, refer friends, and give feedback on your samples.

The Downside

I can't think of one. Sorry.

They sent me their September box, which I promptly prioritized above all other products I'd received recently. Here's what I got:
