The Beauty Products We Bought In 2013 That We're Definitely Buying Again In 2014

13 xoVain writers reveal their favorite beauty product purchases of... well... '13.

I love this time of year. I mean, who doesn't? Whether
you've had a dreadful 2013 or the kind that makes you look back fondly over the
past 12 months, the excitement for what another new year brings indubitably
lingers in the frosty air.

Today, we're taking a moment to dig through our makeup bags
and cosmetic battle stations to find the best beauty product we purchased in
all of 2013. You know, the type of beauty product you find yourself reaching
for nearly every day; the one that you'll most definitely buy another of the
second you start to run low on your current.

It seems like I've been on the prowl for an amazing liquid
eyeliner for all of 2013. I love wearing a clean cat eye and red lip, but
nothing messes the whole thing up more than an eyeliner not doing its job. I'll
spare you the details and just tell you that I've experienced many frustrated,
huffy moments in front of the mirror with my fists in the air, clutching a
subpar eyeliner, cursing the beauty gods.

Seriously. I've tried countless eyeliners and have found a
few that kinda sorta suffice, but there's one that blew me away this year:
Stila's Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Intense Black. Holy smokes!
It applies like a dream, dries instantly and looks amazing all day long. (Pro tip: Store all your liquid eyeliners tip down!)

I hated 2013 and I am SO glad to see it go. That said,
beauty wise, 2013 was also the Year of the Brow, which I can get behind.

Anastasia Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes in Brunette was a very big part of
my makeup arsenal. It comes with a wax cream, two shades of brow powder,
eyeshadow highlighter and a bunch of stencils to fake big, bold brows pretty
realistically. I suspect 2014 will beYear of the Brow II.

My best beauty buy of 2013 is Tony Moly Cristal Blusher
in Milky Violet. At first I was a little unsure of the wearability of purple
blush, but I totally fell for this creamy lavender colour after Mari suggested
, so I decided to give it a try.

In short, I love it. The purple is
subtle and complements my skin tone and pastel wardrobe perfectly. As someone
who only ever wore pink NARS blush, this $9 Tony Moly blush has totally
changed my routine. It is perfection!

My favorite product discovery of 2013 is G.U.M. Soft-Picks. I have two impacted lower back teeth. One in the back on
each side--the result of crappy orthodontic work. Needless to say, food gets
trapped so resoundingly back there, so the dental floss of mere mortals DOES

My hygienist turned me on to G.U.M. Soft-Picks this year when food
the size of appetizers began to lodge back there
and would not budge no matter the astuteness of my flossing. They slide
easily between teeth and ride along the gum. They have bristles, which really
dislodge trapped food, even from the tightest or most difficult to reach
places. Also, they massage the flesh, thusly helping guard against gum disease.

These things RULE. I'm in such relief from using them!

My favourite
beauty discoveries for 2013 were ARCONA's Solution Pads and NARS' Eye Paints
(which I used in my Guy Bourdin article).

This selfie is of me without makeup
after using the Solution pads for a week. They are amazing! And I love the Eye
Paints for the range of shades and how well they wear and blend. I use
different shades as shadow, liner, and even blend two different ones for
filling in my brows.

My favorite product of 2013
is my fairy godmother Elizabeth Dehn's oil cleanser!

recently started using oil cleanser in the morning and my skin loves it. This
one is all organic and not only smells awesome, but also delivers a blast of
moisture and glow to my face every day.

My favorite product of 2013
was Dr. Teal's Foaming Bath. I had the most stressful, busy year of my life,
and I'm thankful for it, but I had to learn to prioritize relaxation time so I
didn't totally lose it.

Dr. Teal's bath products
have essential oils in them to keep skin from getting dry, and some of the
scents are eucalyptus and lavender which are SO relaxing. They get super-foamy,
which is necessary for me because when I bathe like a princess--or a Hollywood Boulevard hooker who's been invited to stay in a millionaire dude's penthouse

A lot of love goes to my
favourite sunscreen I discovered this year: Kiss Me Sunkiller Clear Water
SPF 50.

It is literally like pouring water over your face. It's not thick and
does not give me a white wash. Perfect under makeup, too! LOVE IT.

You guys already
heard a lot about my most expensive beauty purchase of the year--my Dr. Jart
moisturizer--and although I still love it, I thought I'd mention something new.
I always get distracted by whatever's new and shiny.

Right now, my latest
purchase is Kate Walsh's Boyfriend, which I sneakily gave myself for Christmas.
I never buy nice perfume for myself, but this one smells sexy and grownup in
the same way as Tom Ford's Black Orchid--and it's way more affordable. Plus it
has my boyfriend's name on the bottle... along with my brother's,

My best new beauty purchase
of 2013 is the Kerastase Nutritive Masque Nutri-Thermique.

I have put my hair
through a lot this year, and using this treatment has really saved it from the
damage it should be facing. Whenever my ends start to feel (understandably)
crunchy, I use this and they're super-nourished again.

I can't believe I
lived without the Auto Pilot BBB Cream by Napoleon Perdis. I recently purchased
it and it is hands-down the best beauty product I've bought this year.

also the best BB cream I've ever tried. It goes on smooth and has some subtle
shimmer that will make your skin glow. It also provides great coverage and
lasts all day.

I have
combination to oily skin skin and have issues finding a liquid foundation or BB
cream that won't make my skin look greasy. Auto Pilot BBB Cream gives me a very
natural finish, which is what I look for in makeup.

Although 2013 was
a bit of a bumpy year, I know I'm always going to look back on it and smile. So
much amazing stuff happened for me this year, and I am so thankful for all of

Beauty-wise, one
of the things I am MOST thankful for are the Revlon Kissable Balm Stains, which
were my ultimate game-changers of twenty-thirteen. They are amazing.
Lightweight and shiny, but not glittery, with amazing staying power and
FANTASTIC colour--all for under 10 bucks. What's not to love about that?

Though I own every single colour (seriously), my favourite right now is
Smitten, a medium but intense purplish-pink. Smitten has the distinction of
being one of those magical shades that looks incredible on every single skin
tone and at every age. In fact, my mum steals this from me every chance she
gets she loves it so much. Sorry mama, this one's mine.

My pick for this
year is Rimmel Waterproof Gel Eyeliner in brown. Totally basic, but I love a
gel eyeliner with an attached brush!

It goes on subtle, but you can build it
for more dramatic looks. It does last forever--especially with a primer and
powder set--and it's so portable. I use it for my boring workday look, but
layer it up and smudge it kohl-style and add some gold leaf for skulking around
in the dark. It takes the sweaty, house show mosh pit in stride.

Lashes by Milani is my favourite mascara. EVER. It has a huge fat wand that is
curved perfectly. One coat darkens and separates, but you can layer it up for
the most majestic, beefy, intense lashes ever. It's a thinner formula, so it
doesn't crack or flake when you add three-plus layers.

These are our
faves. Now we want to hear all about yours. Feel free to share a picture of
yourself wearing your favorite beauty purchase of the year!
