New Year's Eve Hair: Just Add Glitter!

How to put glitter in your hair and keep it there.

Nothing screams "Happy New Year!" quite like big hair and glitter. So I've come up with an easy holiday hairstyle that works especially well on my pixie cut, but could also be worn with longer hair.

Let's talk supplies.

  • A mini flat iron
  • Hairspray
  • Heat protectant spray
  • Glitter (or your choice of festive adornment)

This is very simple and fast, and can be done with almost any pixie cut that has some length in the front. LONG HAIR FRIENDS: I have a solution for you down below.

First, spritz the front of your (dry or damp) hair with a heat protectant.

I used Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion.

Now use your flat iron to shape the front of your hair into a sort of romantic version of a pompadour.

I was able to achieve this through a combination of stubbornness, luck, and hairspray.

By taking small amounts of hair in the front--between one and three fingers width--and curling them back away from my face, I managed to get a lot of volume. Then I blasted the whole thing with Aussie Sun-Touched Shine Hair Spray.

This made for a great retro look that was different enough from my usual flat pixie to be considered party-appropriate. I added a cat-eye and some red lipstick (NYX Matte Lipstick in Alabama) to finish the look.

To make the style NYE-appropriate, grab some glitter.

I always have glitter stored away (mostly for nail art or kids’ craft projects) and I can’t think of anything that makes me feel like the holidays are here more than the endless frustration of having glitter everywhere. So yeah, I put it in my hair.

Add even more hairspray to help keep the glitter in place.

I kept the glitter in the front section so it would look intentional. That last coat of hairspray helped keep the glitter in place--surprisingly--for an entire night.

If you have long hair, I suggest piling your hair on top of your head and pinning it down with most of the volume in the front.

It’s been years since I had long hair, though, so I should probably stick to the short hair tutorials.

You also don’t have to use glitter. You could spice up this hairstyle with a headband, barrettes, or even gold leaf. I was just in a glittery mood.

  • How do you feel about sprinkling glitter in your hair? (If the answer is “apprehensive,” I understand but encourage you to reconsider after several glasses of Champagne.)
