Bangs, fringe, breakage — whatever you call it, it'll fit in some butterfly clips.
I made a weird New Year's resolution: wear more hair accessories.
Sounds easy, right? For me, though, it's not. For me, it's like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube inside of a Picasso painting.
The seed for this resolution was planted during a recent trip to the beautiful Salon Ruggeri. I got a fantastic blowout from stylist Annie Kozlow after a tour of their gorgeous space, which is full of furniture and decor you can actually buy. (Or can fantasize about buying.)
On my way out, they generously gave me several pieces of something else you can buy at Salon Ruggeri: beautiful hair accessories made as a collaboration between salon founder Greg Ruggeri, his partner Craig Longhurst, and jewelry company Ciner.
I couldn't not start incorporating these beautiful pins into my hair looks. There's just one problem.
I have only one hair look: down.
I may go back and forth between straight and wavy textures, and natural and unnatural colors; and I may casually throw my hair into a ponytail, but I never — and I mean 0.01% of the time — put pins, barrettes and other accessories in my hair.
The first reason for this is because I'm not sure how to do it. As many tutorials as I watch, as many pictures as I try to copy, I just can't seem to get it right. I mean, maybe I am getting it right, but I'm not confident that I am. Not even with simple accessories like these lovely bobby pins.
The other reason is because, even if I'm wearing a hair accessory in exactly the way it's intended, it doesn't look right to me. I'm so used to my unadorned hair that when there's a shiny piece of metal in it or band of fabric across it, I feel like I'm wearing a costume.
This year, I want to get past that discomfort and feel more confident switching things up with my hair.
So for today's Open Thread, I ask you:
- What's your go-to hair accessory?
- How do you convince yourself to try new things when it comes to beauty stuff — and actually leave the house in those looks?
- Show me your favorite hair-accessory looks!
- And of course, talk amongst yourselves about anything you darn well please.
