I’m trying Nioxin for 30 days, because I’m losing it, you guys.
We lose a lot of things in our lifetime: our keys, our favorite sweater, and then, you know, we lose our cool, because that sweater was EVERYTHING and now there’s absolutely nothing lush to wear in a pinch.
But losing is natural, it’s human--we’re all a bunch of losing losers at some point in our lives. Let me tell you, though, I am super bummed about losing my hair. I'm living in Shed City. It's like having a pet to clean up after, but without the cool benefits of unconditional love or snuggle sessions.
My already fine hair seems to be jumping ship at an accelerated rate. So, I spoke with a doctor about what thinning hair and hair loss in women can mean and what can be done.
Did You Know That You Lose 100 Strands Of Hair Per Day?
First off, while hair loss and hair thinning can be stressful, it's a normal experience that many women go through. It usually comes with aging and can play a huge role in a woman’s emotional and psychological well-being. We all have about 100,000 hair follicles and typically we lose a about 100 hair strands per day, that looks like this on me.
This can also vary depending on hair texture, and thickness. When you see more than this start dropping out, you become worried and that’s when there’s some concern.
The Three Categories Of Hair Loss
- Follicle: This typically occurs when there is an autoimmune disorder. This condition is not just limited to the scalp and can mean hair loss across your entire body. You will need to be evaluated by a physician immediately and have your thyroid levels checked.
- Pattern: Pattern baldness is mostly associated with men, but it also happens to plenty of women. It primarily shows itself as hair loss at the hair part for women, and the thinning can then increase. Clinicians refer to the Ludwig Classification to show the levels of pattern hair loss in women. Pattern hair loss can often be covered through varying hairstyles and doctors will evaluate hormone levels and thyroid levels when diagnosing pattern hair loss. The most common treatments are Rogaine and medicated shampoos. (True story: I totally dabbled in a bit of Rogaine use during my college years, which honestly was the least daring of my experimentations, but one of the oddest, for sure.)
- Diffuse: This what most women experience when they feel like they are having hair thinning or hair loss. It’s essentially when your hair loses a life cycle rotation. Each follicle goes through about 10 to 30 cycles in its lifetime. When those cycles get interrupted, due to stress, nutrition, pregnancy, or hormonal imbalances, the life cycle of the follicle gets all jacked up and sheds prematurely.
What You Can Do:
In addition to consulting with a physician, Dr. Chan recommends stress reduction techniques, adequate sleep, and exercise or scalp massages to encourage blood flow.
Along with those suggestions, I’m going to try Nioxin System 3 for thirty days to try and bring a bit of life back to my thinning hair. Nioxin doesn’t necessarily work on hair loss, but it does claim to bring volume and density back to thinning hair, which hopefully will help tide me over until my new hair life cycle gets back on track.
