I enlisted the help of Ciara's and Camila Alves's go-to pros to wear my hair in its natural texture for the first time in years.
No matter how good (or bad) my hair looks, the cold weather will dry out my scalp causing irritation and flaking.
Extreme temperatures and stress play into the scalp-is-so-irritated-and-dry-sometimes-I-feel-like-its-going-to-fall-off sensation. And guess what: the cold, dry weather is coming, and you can never be too prepared.
I started applying a DIY hair and scalp mask/treatment/rinse/whatever you want to call it nine months ago every two to three weeks. I’ve changed the recipe many times, but I'm going to show you the best way.
It works in two phases. The first gets rid off all excess skin and cleanses, and the second moisturizes the scalp and hair. So many scalp treatments dry out the hair, so it’s a must to moisturize the hair afterward. Oh, and did I mention that this is an all-natural treatment?
You will need:
• Apple cider vinegar (yes, the almighty ACV makes it to yet another post. Make sure it is raw and organic.)
• Spray bottle (optional, but I strongly recommend it.)
• Tea tree oil or tea tree oil shampoo
• 2 Tbsp. Coconut oil
• 1 Avocado
First, take your spray bottle and fill it with equal parts water and apple cider vinegar. The reason for the spray bottle is so you can get the entire scalp covered. The very first time I did this, I used a large bowl and literally dipped my head in. HA!
Start by parting your hair at the crown and spraying into the part. Make your way from ear to ear, and try to keep the parts close together to get your entire scalp.
Once your crown is completely covered, start parting and spraying the bottom half of your head. When you’re done, tie it up and let it soak for about 5 to 10 minutes. Yeah, it’s going to smell.
Next, rinse your hair and wash it with some tea tree infused shampoo. I’ve been using Nature's Gate Tea Tree Calming Shampoo.
Let your scalp soak in the shampoo for three to five minutes. It is super-soothing and feels almost minty when you let it soak into your hair.
If you’re using tea tree oil alone, mix it up in your spray bottle with some water. This will let you get the oil directly into your scalp. Tea tree oil really dries out your hair, so this will prevent you from getting it on your ends and other parts of your hair that tend to dry out easily. (But washing it with a tea tree shampoo will get rid of the smell.)
So once you’ve chilled for a bit, rinse everything out. Your scalp is thanking you so hard right now, btw.
The first phase is complete! Now on to the second…
Take your avocado and smash it up in a bowl. You can puree the avocado to make it soft like a cream. I have extra respect for you if you actually turn it into a cream. I just don’t have the energy! Add the coconut oil and mix well.
Avocado and coconut oil are suuuuuuuper hydrating and moisturizing to your scalp and hair. And they are both so good for your entire head. Seriously. Hair, scalp, face...your entire head!
Start working the mixture through your hair and massage it into your scalp. It is going to be messy so have a towel handy.
Once you’ve got your entire hair and scalp covered, put in up and let it soak. You can leave it in for a quick 30-minute mask, overnight or while you’re doing laundry/doing your nails/watching Bridesmaids. Yeah, you can turn it into one of those nights.
If you leave it on all night, you will have the best results. I left mine on for the 40 minutes it took me to do my makeup, get dressed and clean my house a little. Nah, just kidding I didn’t clean my house! I kept nagging my roommate to take my picture. (My roommate is my brother. I make him take pictures of me, and I pay him with pizza. It’s a sweet deal.)
When you’re done soaking, rinse your hair and wash it with a mild shampoo. I decided not to wash with a shampoo this time because I loved how good my hair felt. I just rinsed it with cold water!
And you’re done! Your hair and scalp feel amazing, don’t they?
