As a girl with extreme curls, sometimes wetting, combing, and styling my hair is a major chore. And by "sometimes" I mean about every other day. The solution? Bantu knots!
For those ladies who aren't nodding their heads and thinking, Yeah, girl, that's what's up, bantu knots are created by separating hair into sections, twisting those sections into little buns (or knots), sleeping in said buns, and then unraveling them the next morning. Basically, if you like to hit the snooze button (and hit it, and hit it...), this is the hairstyle for you.
The cool thing about this style is that it allows you to change up your texture without heat styling. Although bantu knots are mostly favored by curly girls, straight haired ladies can try them, too.
Here's What You’ll Need:
· Styling cream
· Wide-tooth comb or pick
· Bobby pins
· Mousse (optional)
Most people start by dividing hair into neat and even sections, but since I'm kind of lazy, I just take my hair a section at a time without regard to creating an even part. (I actually find that the curls blend more naturally this way.) As for how much hair to pull for each knot, the general rule is the smaller the knot, the smaller the curl. Since I have naturally tight curls, I make bigger knots to get fuller curls.
How To Make Bantu Knots:
Take your first section and add a dab of your favorite styling cream; you can also use mousse if your hair doesn't hold style well. (I’m using Miss Jessie’s Multicultural Curls). Twist the hair into a rope, wind it into a small bun against your scalp, and secure with a bobby pin.
Repeat this process until you're rocking a Gwen Stefani/Scary Spice look circa 1997. Now comes the easy part: go to sleep.
After you've hit the snooze button a couple of times, roll out of bed and get to unraveling. (Don't freak out if you start to look like Medusa!) Run your fingers through the curls until they are separated and use a wide-tooth comb or pick to blend.
Now you have time focus on more important morning tasks, like making breakfast.
