MEET YOUR NEW FAVORITE FOUNDATION...: How To Pick The Perfect Product For Your Skin Type

If you're not one of these skin types, let us know in the comments! We'll help you. But first, a weird story.

So. Last year I had an appointment with a big-deal skincare guru in New York.

As she went to work on my skin,  she dished that a famous client -- one of the "top three female celebrities" -- spends too much time on airplanes (?) and in heavy makeup. And that said celebrity wears the wrong makeup and that it emphasizes her fine lines and wrinkles.

Then my facialist got nervous and upset with herself a little; you could tell.

"I perfect her skin, and then the makeup artist destroys the results," she said, sort of vaguely. She stopped working on my face for a second and seemed very agitated in her chair.

What was going on?  She completely clammed up for the rest of the appointment while I wondered what had gone down. The whole thing was extremely strange. Were they in a fight? Had the guru been dropped by the celeb and was lashing out that day? I never knew.

Regardless, I was reminded that yes, celebrities are just like us! They wear the wrong foundation for their skin type. And this is also why beauty editors and makeup artists are forever obsessed with finding the best foundations and tinted moisturizers. Everyone is always in the market for the perfect fit in this category.

So which are the best?  I have a few favorites... Cat gave her input as well. And hopefully the poor celebrity is reading, too.

1) Our pick for HORMONAL ACNE-PRONE SKIN is Jane Iredale PurePressed Mineral Base SPF 20:

While it's not technically a foundation, this pressed powder compact offers serious coverage, especially for tricky hormonal chin acne. Skin genius Kate Somerville once told Cat that Jane Iredale was the only makeup that  she should let touch her sensitive skin -- so then we both started using it. You don't use a big brush to sweep it on like you would a loose powder; you just use the applicator to dab it on. So easy.

2) My pick for OIL-PRONE SKIN with random acne is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup:

It works to make skin look even and moisturized. And significantly more youthful. Definitely brighter! And possibly, over time, with smaller-seeming pores. It doesn’t break you (OK, me) out -- which means the acne-fighting ingredients are working, no?  Plus, it's totally affordable.

3) Our pick for DRY OR OLDER SKIN is the incredible Olay Total Effects Moisturizer + Touch of Foundation:

Anything by Olay Regenerist is killer, says Cat, and I agree! Featuring a genius blend of softening agents and just enough pigment, this anti-aging skin perfector works double time to give you even, glowy coverage.

4) My pick for ALL SKIN TYPES, at a sexier budget, is Chanel Vitalumiere Foundation:

Everyone who tries this foundation becomes a convert, including all the xoJane beauty girls. It comes in the most elegant glass bottle with a pump. Pumps are the best, aren't they? But it's the makeup itself that you'll love: just a drop or two (seriously!) of this liquid formula works to neutralize blemishes and imperfections without leaving skin too matte or too dewy.

Now, what kind of skin did I forget? And what foundations do YOU love? Go on, tell me! In the comments. xo
