Magnets. We slap ‘em on our cars, attach them to our refrigerators, and now...the ends of our makeup brushes. Thanks to Rae Morris, Australia’s top makeup artist and L’Oréal Paris’ longest serving worldwide makeup director, I’m a total believer in magnetic makeup brush storage.

As Morris points out in this video, brush canisters are annoying because you have to look/feel around to grab what you need, brush rolls take up too much space, and don't even get me started on the hygiene issues with letting your brushes roll around in the bottom of your makeup bag.

Of course you can purchase Morris' magnetized brushes and brush plate, but if you're already in a committed brush relationship (like I am with my Real Techniques), you can follow this easy DIY.

Here's What You’ll Need

  • Any brushes you’re looking to convert
  • Strong, circular magnets in various sizes (you can get them at the craft store)
  • Equally strong glue, like Amazing GOOP

First, add a small dollop of glue to the end of the magnet and wait a few minutes, as the glue works best if it dries a bit.

Wait 24 hours for the glue to fully dry and find a new use for your brush canisters. You won't be needing them anymore!

A word of caution: Definitely, definitely let the glue dry for a full 24 hours. I didn't follow this rule the first time around and when I tried to pull the brushes from the plate I ripped off the magnets. You can rest these on any magnetic surface, or you can buy the Rae Plate for $35.

BONUS: Add magnets to heavily used products, like I did with my MUFE Aqua Matic and NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream.

By the way, Rae Morris now sells a 3D brush stand, so you can hang some brushes upside down--great for drying after cleaning--and some right-side up. Or you can just hang them from your oven handle or something.
