But you should still donate to a worthy cause -- whichever one you like!
As a self-confessed lipstick hoarder, I can never decide which lipsticks to take with me when I travel. After hauling a ton of makeup with me on my trip to Maui last November, I decided it was time to find a solution. Not only does this DIY lip palette solve my packing problem, it's also a GREAT way to use the lipstick at the bottom of the bullet, which often goes to waste
Here's What You Need:
- An empty lip palette or close-able container with individual wells in it
- Small de-potting spatula
- Sharp knife
- Rubbing alcohol
- Paper towel or rag
- Lipsticks of choice
- Cutting board/surface
- Small blank circle labels
- Writing utensil
STEP 1: Sanitize.
Using rubbing alcohol and a rag, I sanitize my empty palette wells, cutting surface, and tools.
STEP 2: Scoop out the inner core of your lipsticks.
Starting with my first lipstick, I twist the tube up and cut the end off at the base. Using the pointed end of my de-potting spatula, I dig out the excess lipstick from the inside of the bullet and place that in the lipstick well. Then I put the cut end back into the bullet.
STEP 3: Fill your palette.
To get the lipsticks into the wells, you can either smash them or heat them. I prefer the former because, although it's messy, it doesn't alter the formula, as heating can. (Also: using the heating method on lipstick with glitter or shimmer can cause the particles to settle at the bottom, in my experience.)
With my de-potting spa, I smash the lipstick I've scooped out of the bullet into the well, smoothing it over as much as I can.
STEP 4: Label and clean up as you go.
As I put each lipstick into the palette, I write the brand and shade on a blank label and stick it underneath the corresponding well. I also clean my tools after each lipstick, using a paper towel or rag dipped in rubbing alcohol.
As I repeat the cutting and smashing process for each of my lipsticks, I clean up the edges of the wells with Q-tips dipped in rubbing alcohol.
Once all the wells are filled and the edges are cleaned up, I pop my insert into an empty pro palette.
