It's gonna get sappy up in here.
I’ve become somewhat of a sun protection enthusiast these last few months. Believe me, it’s not something that I just decided to get all excited about for no reason - I recently had a horrible skin test prior to a glycolic peel which scanned deep into my skin showing results of lines, pigmentation and BROWN SPOTS on the horizon! What was the root cause? Sun damage. Yep, from an Asian girl who lives in rainy ol’ England and never sunbathes, all my future skin complaints would hail from the sun and its evil UV rays. Thankfully however, whilst this all lay in store for me, it could still be significantly reduced and further prevented with regular glycolic peels and most importantly, from that day on, high sun protection all year round. Nothing lower than an SPF 30 was to touch my face ever again!
Since then after much swotting up I’ve discovered that a staggering 80% of skin ageing is caused by sun damage and UV rays. Yep, 80% that you could effectively prevent by simply wearing sun protection daily. But it’s not easy, I get that. Sun cream is often greasy, heavy, breaks you out and is just not ideal for daily wear. Let alone the idea of having to fork out for yet another product to add to your already growing list of daily beauty essentials. So I’ve compiled a selection of my favourite budget facial sun protection products that adhere to three strict rules; they have to cost under a tenner (okay, so I haven’t been that strict on this one), they mustn’t clog your skin, and lastly (and arguably most importantly!), you can wear your normal make-up on top.
Cheap suncream that does the trick - what could be better?
Nivea Sun Pocket Size SPF 30If you really hate the thick, heavy feeling sun cream gives than I cannot recommend this lotion enough. The fastest-absorbing, lightest-feeling, non-greasy product of the lot! It sinks in so quickly you almost feel like you should apply more just to feel like you’re wearing adequate sun cream. This size here for a measly £2.95 (it’s currently half price at Superdrug!) is perfect to keep in your pocket thanks to its slimline design, my only one complaint is that I WISH it came in SPF 50.
Superdrug Solait Mattifying Face Sun Fluid SPF 30Another one of the cheapies (under a fiver!), and incidentally again one of the best. Not as fast-absorbing as the Nivea, but a very good runner up.
No 7 Anti-Dark Spot Facial Sun Protection SPF 30The priciest option at £11. I like this solely for the fact that it comes in both SPF 30 and SPF 50 (why is SPF 50 so hard to find?), and also works as a treatment against sun pigmentation damage alongside protecting.
Soltan Face Moisturising Sun Cream SPF 50Probably my least favourite of the bunch as it’s the thickest and thus most heavy feeling, however the price is fantastic at £8 and it comes in the all-important SPF 50!
Coppertone Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50If you’re lucky to have this readily available, snap it up! I actually got my aunt from the States to bring it over after reading Liv Tyler used it (I’m such a sucker for all that stuff). This particular one is not specifically for the face but I use it there and it’s fine. It makes my skin feel velvety smooth and works beautifully under make-up. If you’ve got good skin you could even get away with just this and some concealer, thanks to the pearly finish it leaves skin (which I know some people don’t like, but I do!) At $7 or so a pop, which is the equivalent of £4, you really couldn’t get more cost effective for the amount you get.
