My Top 5 High School Football Movies

Movies about football that you'll like even if you don't like football. And a shirtless picture of Paul Walker!

Last week I wrote a really depressing post that was kind of about high-school football, but really about how my mother sent me to reform school. This week, I’m writing about actual high-school football. Or rather: my favorite movies that feature high school football. Think: hot guys, hot guys, and also some pretty riveting plot lines. With hot guys.

Even if you don’t like football, I promise you these movies are all totally worth watching. Trust me.

My 5 Favorite Movies That Have at Least a Little Bit to Do with High School Football:

#5: Lucas

Corey Haim, Charlie Sheen, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Jeremy Piven and Winona Ryder. Enough said. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid and having my heart break for the very first time.

#4: The Blind Side

Yes. I cried. Stop judging me. It’s a really good movie. Plus, I'm a sucker for anything that's based on a true story.

#3: Remember the Titans

Based on a true story about two high schools (one all white, the other all black) that were forced to close in order to form a new racially mixed school due to desegregation. Racial divides, new friendships, and smash-mouth football. Doesn’t get better than that.

#2: Varsity Blues

Whipped cream bikinis, a pig that thinks it’s a dog, Dawson, Paul Walker (swoon) and good ol’ fashioned small-town Texas football. Also, apparently the soundtrack was good? Or at least that’s what I thought when I bought it in 1999.

#1: Dazed and Confused

Fine, so there aren’t any actual football scenes in this cult classic about a group of teenagers on their last day of school in 1976, but don’t forget that star quarterback Randall “Pink” Floyd’s dilemma of whether or not to sign a pledge promising not to take drugs during the summer is central to the plot. Plus, who cares. It’s my second favorite movie (right after “Clueless”) of all time. Plus, it’s just so quotable.

Also, crap. This list doesn’t feature nearly enough hot guys. I think we should collectively blame the fact that I moved this weekend and my life is in complete chaos. Add a crippling anxiety attack today on top of that and, well, it’s hard to get stoked on hot guys. But whatever. Paul Walker is hot. And, I hate to say it, but Charlie Sheen kind of holds his own in “Lucas.” There’s a towel scene. That’s all I’ll say.

So tell me. What are your favorite sports movies? And yes, “The Cutting Edge” totally counts. Toe Pick!
