How do you know that something you're fantasizing about should be explored, and when it should remain in your head?

My current boyfriend of 3 years and I have a pretty standard BDSM relationship, me being the submissive and him being the dominant. It's the first relationship I have been in where I have been able to really explore these feelings I have always had, and feel fulfilled in a way I never have before. This is the first relationship for him where love is involved, as he has only dominated casually in the past because ex- girlfriends weren't into it. Basically, it's a good situation.
Now that I am learning so much about myself, my mind has definitely been wandering when I'm alone, imagining even more extreme scenarios (I won't get into too much detail). I guess my question is, how do you know that something you're fantasizing about should be explored, and when it should remain in your head? I'm worried about trying some things, and then regretting them to a point where our relationship is damaged.
Any advice would be amazing!
