You Are The Advice Columnist: How Do I Teach My Kids About Cultural Appropriation?

I am doing my best to convey that is not appropriate, but I seem to be falling short of my kids understanding WHY putting on a costume from another culture would be inappropriate.

"I have three lovely children that I am trying to raise into decent adult humans, which is treacherous and terrifying. My kids are all blonde haired and blue eyed and about as Caucasian as they come. With Halloween coming up, we've been looking through costume magazines and my one daughter in particular (aged 9) is fascinated by Indian saris and "gypsy" costumes and Native American head dresses. I am doing my best to convey that is not appropriate, but I seem to be falling short of my kids understanding WHY putting on a costume from another culture would be inappropriate.

There are so many wonderful voices here on xoJane, and I was hoping someone might be able to give me some insight and guidance."
