"I just bought a condo in a small building in my city. There are only a few other neighbors and the houses are pretty close together. Weed is decriminalized in my state, so I do smoke every few days. In addition to that, many of my friends are smokers (of both cannabis and tobacco). I paid for my condo, so I believe I have every damn right to smoke whatever I want/is legal, whenever and for as long as I want. However, I know people are sensitive to the smell. I want to get off on the right foot with my neighbors without rolling over for them, but I am unsure how to approach this. I was thinking about sending each neighbor a letter, briefly introducing myself and explaining that I am a smoker and that I am willing to meet anyone with a sensitivity halfway by checking the neighboring apartments for open windows, giving folks a heads up before smoking, or going halfsies on an air filter for whichever neighbors might require it.
I know people who have gotten shit from neighbors about smoking. My general attitude is if nearby smells and scents bother you that much, move to the country...but this isn't exactly what I want to tell my neighbors.
What should I do? How would non-smokers prefer for smoker neighbors to deal with their habit?"
