We loved our son before we even met him, from that first agency call when we knew only his age and name.
You feel responsible for the kid you see in front of you, the kid clearly suffering from a lifetime of abuse and neglect, this kid whose life might have maybe been different, if only. You play “if only” a lot.

Discussing kids as being damaged makes it sound like they’re a chair partially eaten by termites, or a scratch on a car bumper. Kids aren’t objects which can be repaired or ruined for good.

I'm only now speaking publicly about why I wrote the vicious obituary. Even in death, this woman still gives me nightmares.
The idea that there are 16,000 foster children in NYC alone, each as unique and precious as my foster son, each needing stable, loving homes both temporary and permanent, actually hurts me when I think about it, makes it hard to breathe.
