I couldn’t control what students or colleagues would say or how they would behave, but I could control how I felt about my presence in the classroom. I did that by embracing my personal style.

I try not to smile in case someone thinks it's distracting, I work with fierce concentration to show I am worth the company I am in. I am painfully sensitive about my academic achievements because they're like a security blanket validating my self-worth.

If the language of feminism isn't accessible to people who haven't had very specific, very pricey educations, well, how is any real progress going to be made?
I’m not PhD material. Not because I’m not smart enough, but because I am simply unwilling to toil away for five years to eventually maybe get a job that I probably won’t enjoy a whole heck of a lot.
