When I'm not inside writing, I spend a ton of time outside. Couple that with the fact that I'm nearing 30, and well, I've become a bit of a wrinkle-a-phobe.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm excited to age, and hope to do it gracefully, but that doesn't mean I want wrinkles prematurely. How do I handle this? With sunscreen, a ton of hats, and nutrition. As I've written before, I'm super into eating for my organs. Our skin is the largest and most visible organ in/on the body, so it's super important to (tr)eat it right.

Soy. When it comes to eating for your face, the estrogen-like chemicals called isoflavones found in soy can help keep wrinkles at bay. From nutritional professionals to body builders, everyone has their own opinion on soy. To get the low-down on soy and its affect on our faces, I turned to beauty nutritionist Paula Simpson.

“This topic is still debatable among health and nutrition experts,” says Simpson. “Soy contains isoflavones, which function as phytoestrogens, meaning they activate estrogen receptors in the human body. When estrogens levels decline as women age, phyoestrogens may help to balance and promote estrogen balance. When levels are low, skin becomes dry and more prone to the structural breakdown that bring fine lines and wrinkles.”

My own doctor told me I shouldn't worry about eating (organic, non-GMO) soy until I hit menopause, when it's a crucial time to let the body figure out its own hormone levels. So, if you're still far from menopause, you need not worry about getting beauty benefits from soy in its whole form: Tofu, soybeans and edamame.

Blueberries. These blue beauties are full of flavonoids and polyphenols, which help promote cell regeneration, aka new, youthful skin cells. Just like tomatoes, blueberries are high in vitamin C, which strengthens collagen formation.

Get in my mouth!


Tomatoes. All hail lycopene, which protects your skin from stupid UV damage and improves your circulatory system, getting more blood flowing to all of your organs –- skin included. Tomatoes also contain high levels of vitamin C, which helps build collagen naturally, making your skin look full.

Green tea. Like blueberries, green tea also promotes cell regeneration, as it is full of EGCG, a catechin that acts as an antioxidant roundhouse to the face. Aim for two cups of the good green stuff per day.

Organ-sized avocado...

Avocado. Avocado is creamy and delicious, so I love finding more excuses to eat it. The healthy fats in this fruit are full of glutathione, an anti-aging component that is good for detoxing, fighting acne, and stalling wrinkles. Whaddup, guacamole.
