Would I have to start planning outfits around the tattoo like I plan for weather?
As a former choir nerd who used to sing with an all-girl barbershop quartet, I've always liked karaoke. But since I've started dating again, I've found myself in karaoke bars on a weekly basis. It's a great way to entertain yourself in a bar when you don't drink.
Don't get me wrong, I used to do karaoke while WASTED. I have an unfortunately vivid memory of attempting to jump off a stage in the middle of Joan Jett's "I Hate Myself for Loving You" and landing flat on my ass, and I also know I used to flash my tits and/or ass during punk metal karaoke at my local bar. Big surprise: I was a drunken boob shower.
I was a little scared to sing sober, until a couple of years in, when I rented a private room with some of my friends and experienced both my first sober karaoke and my first sober all-nighter. (Weirdly, when you stay out all night not drinking, you still wake up with a mild hangover.)
Now that I'm doing karaoke so frequently, I've been blazing through my go-to songs and having to branch out into even more obscure 90s hits and classic country tracks. Speaking of the latter, sometimes we just descend upon a Manhattan bar and refuse to sing anything but country no matter how disinterested everyone is. I've sung most of the Loretta Lynn catalog this way. This is also how I heard what I consider to be the most effed up song lyric of all time: "There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes." AHHHHHHHHHH JESUS.
Anyway, my classic first song choices are probably still "Stay" by Lisa Loeb and "Kiss Me Deadly" by Lita Ford. (Honorable mentions go to "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks and "Who Will Save Your Souls" by Jewel. My karaoke-loving manfriend says the key is picking the songs you loved when you were 13. Also, he regularly sings "I Like My Women Just a Little on the Trashy Side" causing FUCKING KEEPER.
So what are your go-to karaoke songs? I NEED IDEAS. Or if you hate karaoke, you can just tell me what your favorite song was when you were 13.
