Oh hey beautiful babies, and welcome back to another saucy installment of That One Drink. Last week, we talked about those beverages that come in bottles that you cannot ignore.
The winner, which was brought to us by emchammer, was a collection of Australian bottles of wine that I do not have access to. They were very pretty though, which was the whole point. So let us gaze upon their beauty.
I'm Australian, and de bortoli has the prettiest bottles I've ever seen
Being very much not in Australia, I was not able to sample these finely-packaged wares, but this La Boheme line of wines by De Bortoli is quite easy on the eyes. I would particularly like to try the rosé, but I am in a very rosé kind of mood. (According to emcehammer, the wines inside these glorious bottles are "pretty standard," but I almost refuse to believe it because just look at them.)
A beautiful bottle (or, in this case, bottles) deserves a beautiful trophy, and that trophy is "Dearest" by Buddy Holly.
Moving right on a long, let's talk about springy beverages.
By "springy" I mean "appropriate for the beautiful spring weather we are having," not "full of springs," but you probably knew that. It doesn't have to be sweet, but it does have to be infinitely sippable. Something about the sun being out just makes me want to sit on a patio and sip something pink and delicious. There's a punch that really fits the bill.
This thing is made with gin (my favorite), pomegranate, cilantro, and jalapeno. All that nonsense is topped with sparkling wine, and damn it if it isn't the most refreshing, springy beverage I've ever had, with just enough heat. (If you are in Portland and want to try this glorious beverage, it can be found at Church. Bonus: It's really fun when your Lyft driver thinks he's taking you to an actual place of worship, only to pull up to the establishment and find out it's a bar.)
I don't know the exact ratios, but I imagine it would go a little something like this:
Claire's Bastardized Springy Punch
- 1.5 ounces of gin
- 0.5 ounces straight cranberry juice
- 1 tablespoon simple syrup
- couple sprigs of cilantro
- 1 slice of jalapeno
- sparkling wine to top
How you do:
- Place the cilantro and jalapeno in the bottom of a shaker and muddle.
- Throw everything else besides the sparkling wine in the shaker and shake, shake, shake.
- Strain into a glass filled with ice.
- Top with sparkling wine.
- Take your glass outside and into the glorious, warm sunlight.
- Sip, relish, enjoy.
My other favorite warm weather beverage is this Cucumber Saison made by Cigar City. I can't get it anymore (unless someone wants to mail it to me) but it is delicious, and if someone has a west-coast counterpart recommendation, I am all ears.
What beverage do you enjoy sipping out of doors, when the sun is out and the flowers are blooming and everything it right in the world? What drink screams "spring" at your face? What do you want to drink while soaking up some vitamin D?
