Growing up, I consistently heard that the best silhouette “emphasized the smallest part of my body,” along with, “black is slimming” and “draping hides flaws.” At the time, I thought these to be universal truths, but as I got older, my ideas about fashion changed. I stopped asking what I should wear and started thinking about what I wanted to wear. I quickly learned that I had a fondness for a certain vintage shape.

At the peak of Gatsby-mania last summer, I fell in love with the 1920's -- you know, along with the rest of the world. Although, I’m a fifties-sixties kind of gal, the early eras called my name. I had the hair down to a science, but drop-waist dresses were next on my list.

I’m a size 12 to 14, meaning that I fit into straight sizes and plus sizes depending on the garment, but I specifically wanted to look for plus-size dresses. Some sites had limited options, but call me optimistic, that seems to be (slowly) changing these days, at least with a few brands.

I found that ASOS had the best selection for new pieces and Etsy had the best vintage items. I checked a few sites known for vintage reproductions, but drop-waists were surprisingly rare. All in all, ASOS has a ridiculous amount of dresses, many of which come in plus-sizes. Here are few favorites:

I also just found this beauty at the Goodwill outlet. I think it’s a nightie, but it’ll be perfect for the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor's Island in New York City this summer. I can’t wait to wear it!

One more shopping tip: If you love vintage reproductions, there are fabulous plus-size options with Bettie Page Clothing and Stop Staring. Drop-waist dresses can be hard to come by, but it's not impossible. Are you into them?
