Sassy/Jane Nostalgia Corner: Famous People Before You Cared
-
[It's funny how famous Charlie Sheen is now because I definitely didn't forsee this one. He was the only "celebrity" we could get at the last minute for Sassy's August 1989 issue. I liked to have one two-page celebrity story in every issue and this is who we got.
Take it away, Christina.
] "Early in the year when that whole thing with Charlie Sheen was blowing up, my friend Maureen said, "I was thinking about you and the interview you did with Charlie Sheen for Sassy." And I said, "I didn't interview Charlie Sheen." But then she jogged my memory, about how he was not very nice, and she kind of described the picture and I had a vague memory of meeting him for an interview in a conference room. I couldn't have cared less about him. Back then would have wanted Emilio Estevez, not Charlie Sheen." -
Which BALDWIN is this? It's BILLY, when he was a model circa 1992.
-
Pre-Titanic Billy Zane. I miss Billy. He's hot.
-
You know that creepy long-haired drug dealer (with a heart) in Pulp Fiction who refuses to stab Uma Thurman in the chest? Yeah, this is him. Eric Stoltz... swoon. [He came up to the pink Sassy offices at 1 Times Square one time and we were all so in love with him we could hardly stand it. But we were in love with him from Some Kind of Wonderful with the amazing Mary Stuart Masterson.

Baby Gwynnie. What a cute, cool lady-- I like her idea! [Who would have known that more than a quarter century later we could be friends and have kids the same age that played nicely together? P.S. Call me a name-dropper if you like!

Oh Harry, how your voice has grown on us so. [I remember thinking he was a little too old to be "One To Watch "because our demographic was 14-19. I think we may have lied about his age a little bit, downward. He was more a crooner than our usual type

Not even "One to Watch" ... just a dude along with five others (we zoomed in on him), talking about his love life (answering whether they would date older women). Also-- he seems to be a redhead here, no?
-
Lil' baby Lenny. The baby girl they refer here to is now famous in her own right, the 22-year old Zoë.
-
Pre-"Friends "Matt LeBlanc (five years before, to be exact).
-
Milla Jovovich. [She looks 10.
] -
Samantha Mathis looks so cool in her flannel and come hither look. Her running through an apartment covered in blood from American psycho Christian Bale? NOT COOL.
-
Wayans-alert! [Not our best photographic effort. "Let's get a little grass in the foreground."
] -
SPIKE JONZE. "Oh, hey! I'm just helping out my friend Jane with her magazine by scouting out cool places for models to pose. NBD. "
-
Noni! (Or whatever for-famous-people-only nickname that Jane calls you...) [Why didn't I put her on the cover? I wonder who was on the cover that month.
] -
Rachel Dratch! Love! Still on SNL! Before she made it big (one of my favorite characters that she does? The blue guy on "30 Rock").
-
Kristen Stewart on the right. You know, "from Panic Room"?
-
Sam Ronson, pre-Lindsay with long, light hair. Cute, then and now.
-
CHRIS PRATT. 1. I love you 2. You have incredible handwriting, some of the best I've seen from a dude. Apparently he didn't warrant a full page.
-
Paz at 18. Here she is now.
-
Krysten Ritter -- just a hot girl on the street, being semi-creeped on courtesy of Jane Magazine. (Also, I don't know about you guys, but I love her most in "Veronica Mars". My favorite show ever. Please email me if you also think that show = perfect television.)
-
Zoe Saldana at 24 promoting the film, Crossroads. [I loved Crossroads, and stop being snarky.
] -
Jimmy's first time ever in print was in Jane magazine! Lovely.
