Friday fashion loveliness: Garance Doré hooks up with Kate Spade New York

I love the rich, autumnal colours she’s used on these designs – they make me think of something my current (fictional) style crush, Megan Draper, would wear with flat pointy pumps.

Now here’s something rather gorgeous to ease us into Friday – the collaboration between blogging queen Garance Doré and Kate Spade New York. While Garance is a marvelous writer and photographer, she started her career in fashion as an illustrator and I do miss her whimsical, witty sketches on her blog so it’s nice to see them given centre stage on the pieces in this collection.

Garance has refined her illustrating style over the years from something quite simple and almost cartoony into a chic, feminine aesthetic with a graphic edge. I love the rich, autumnal colours she’s used on these designs – they make me think of something my current (fictional) style crush, Megan Draper, would wear with flat pointy pumps.

Then there’s a sweet, neat purse with a dinky black patent bow.

A dress and a Peter-Pan-collared top sport that famous loopy handwriting that I’m assuming little French children get taught in schools? Très jolie!

Garance is one of the most authentic, humorous characters on the fashion scene at the moment. She has a natural, relaxed chic that plays to her strengths and always has an injection of ‘fashioniness’ without feeling too try-hard. That attitude – of being true to your own style and having fun with it – is what fashion should be about. I interviewed her once over the phone and she was utterly charming and the speech she gave when she accepted her joint CFDA award with Scott Schuman earlier this year was inspiring for anyone working in the fashion and/or digital spheres.

The collection will be stocked at the Kate Spade New York stores in London (1-4 Langley Court, Covent Garden, 2 Symons Street, Sloane Square and the new Westfield store).
