Well, fall is here whether we like it or not. Summer is gone, so we have to put away all of our slutty clothes and open-toed shoes until next year. It’s not all bad though, because at least we can break out our fall fragrances! See? Beauty is the upside to everything.
I’ve switched from my summer favorite, Marc Jacobs, to my fall scent, John Varvatos. I’ve been wearing these two scents seasonally for the past eight years. I keep looking for new scents to replace them but there’s seriously just nothing better. It’s really hard to impress me with men’s fragrances.
Women’s fragrances, however, are a totally different story. Ladies, listen up, because there are a couple new scents out there that I am in love with and they just happen to be perfect for fall!
My absolute favorite new fragrance for women is Chanel Coco Noir. I got my hands on a sample vial of it and I love it so much that I have been wearing it unapologetically, even though it’s for women (as if that even comes close to phasing me).
Coco Noir’s top notes include grapefruit and bergamot, middle notes of rose and jasmine, and base notes of tonka bean and patchouli. Now, had I read that description before smelling it, I would have run the other way because I’m not a fan of florals, especially rose, and I loathe patchouli. This fragrance blends them together so well that I can’t help but love it. The rose is definitely noticeable, but it’s not overpowering and doesn’t smell like your grandmother’s perfume. It’s served up with the juicy bite of the grapefruit and finished off with the warm, subtle sweetness of the tonka bean. It even leaves behind this tiny little cloud of fragrance when you spray it, so my bedroom holds the scent throughout the day.
Ugh, I just love it. And so does everyone else! My man caught a whiff of me while I was wearing it and told me I smelled really nice, to which I replied “THANKS, I’M WEARING WOMEN’S PERFUME.” I even recommended it to xoJane’s very own Marianne and she liked it so much that she went out and bought a bottle! I’m telling you, this shit is to DIE! And it’s by Chanel, which immediately makes you a little bit more sophisticated, an added bonus. All I do is win.
Moving right along. Another lovely newcomer is La Petite Robe Noir by Guerlain. Another Noir! A few weeks ago, I went to Sephora with my mom, who is, incidentally, the baddest bitch. After smearing my arms in literally every color of Tarte’s cheek stain to see which shade she liked the most (MY arms, mind you), she sprayed this on herself. And, ooooh, girl. The top notes feature black cherry and red berries, rose and black tea take up the middle and it is finished off once again by tonka bean and patchouli at the base.
This is definitely a night fragrance, but it’s so good you should wear it all day. It’s dark, warm, and SEXY. Definitely an overtly sensual fragrance, which is perfect if you, like me, always strive to smell expensive and slutty.
Next! Dot by Marc Jacobs. Is there anything more fun than a Marc Jacobs fragrance? No, there is not. Dot is the newest member of the Marc Jacobs fragrance family, and it is a very welcome addition. Dot is a fruity and flirty fragrance that is sweet, but not cloyingly so. Red berries and dragonfruit pretty much dominate the fragrance, but coconut water and orange blossoms at its heart are a nice compliment, rounded out by vanilla at its base.
The fragrance sounds extremely sweet, but it wears well. Dot is youthful, but not immature. I promise that you’re not going to smell like a little girl if you wear this. After two “Noirs”, we needed a cute little change of pace, right? Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun. IT’S PERFUME. And we can’t ignore that bottle! Absolutely too adorable, right? It will look so cute sitting on your vanity, or in your gym locker, or flying through your boyfriend’s car windshield. You know, wherever.
I was going to stop with just those three but there’s a wildcard that I discovered today and I really REALLY like. Stay with me here. Nicole, by Nicole Richie. I’ve always been obsessed with Nicole Richie, because, why wouldn’t I be? But really, anyone who can take themselves from being SUCH a train wreck to a successful designer and businesswoman who married a rock star has totally got my vote. Now, I’m just as tired of celebrity fragrances as you are, but I’m going to give Nicole a pass on this one since her House of Harlow line is so successful. She IS a designer now, after all. And have you guys noticed that Paris Hilton is like nowhere to be found?
What was I? Oh, yeah. So this fragrance was inspired by lotions and oils that Nicole’s mother would wear when she was a child, which is such a darling concept that I could just scream. It opens with blackberries and oranges, met in the middle with amber and finishes with cashmere and sandalwood at the base. From start to finish, this fragrance is perfectly balanced, each of the notes compliments the other perfectly, almost amplifying them. The citrus and amber are a great duo, made even better with just a touch of cashmere. Nicole lasts all day, without being overpowering or fading away. How do I know? Because I’m wearing it right now, obviously.
What are your favorite fall fragrances? Are there any new scents that are blowing your mind? What in the HELL is going on with Amanda Bynes? I probably smell like a girl most of the time on Twitter too so hit me up and find out: @TynanBuck
