YOU ARE THE ADVICE COLUMNIST: Hijabi Seeking Hair Help

I am completely hair-illiterate, so almost any advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

My hair has always been kind of a disaster, but, after keeping it covered with a hijab for most of the past five years or so, it has gotten worse. It is thin, brittle (thank you accutane!), and usually flat. It has always had some natural curl, but is definitely more frizzy than it is either curly or straight. The issue is that I am (hopefully! maybe! I better not be jinxing it right now!) planning on getting engaged soon, and, after the religious ceremony, my guy will be allowed to see my hair. To put it bluntly, I want him to think my hair is pretty.
Here are my questions. a) What can I do to make my hair thicker? I've been massaging coconut oil into my hair and scalp for a few months, but I haven't seen in any results. and b) How can I use my natural curl to my advantage? I can make the body curly with product but I have NO IDEA what to to do the hair at the top of my head; do I try to curl it? Straighten it? What do I do with the hair in the bangular area, is what I mean?
