It’s never too late!
If there’s anything that comes close to my love for food, it’s my love for wine. Red, white, rosé, French, German--you name it, I’ll drink it. Well, except for a certain family member’s homemade stuff. That could strip paint off a car.
Anyway, I like wine and February 18 just so happens to be National Drink Wine Day. So, you know what recipe we’re making this week? Winter White Sangria!
Most think of sangria as a summer-specific beverage, but with all the winter citrus in season, now is the perfect time to throw together a delicious seasonal version. Plus, as we’ve discussed before, citrus is packed with vitamin C and antioxidants (and so is wine), which is helpful during the winter months to fight off those nasty colds. Let me just make one disclaimer: everything in moderation!
For this recipe, I’ve chosen to include slices of white grapefruit, blood orange, and a little thing called a mandarinquat. Like a kumquat, mandarinquats can be eaten whole, rind and all, and have a tart-sweet flavor. If your market doesn’t have some of these items available, you can definitely sub in pink grapefruit, navel oranges, and lemon slices, too. The recipe is basic, so feel free to play around with different types of citrus. Go wild!
Winter White Sangria
INGREDIENTS Serves four
- 1 white grapefruit, peeled and sliced into thin rounds
- 1 blood orange, peeled and sliced into thin rounds
- 1 mandarinquat, sliced into thin rounds
- 1 bottle white wine, such as Chardonnay
- Juice of 1 orange, about ½ cup
- 2 ounces Grand Marnier
- 1 cup seltzer water
Place the citrus slices into a large pitcher. Very lightly muddle the fruit to release some of the juices, but be careful not to completely squash them (you still want it to look pretty!). Pour in the wine, orange juice, Grand Marnier, and seltzer. Stir to combine.
