It’s never too late!
I like the New Year. Sure, the parties are lame and expensive, but I like the feeling that it's a new start. 2015! It's ours! Anything is possible!
Even though I don't usually make resolutions, I think I may make a few this year. I want to be healthier, happier and--yes--prettier in 2015 than ever before, and I want the same things for you! So here are seven beauty and health resolutions that we should ALL make to start this New Year off in the best way possible.
1. STOP SLEEPING IN YOUR MAKEUP
How many times am I going to say this? Probably until people stop saying things like “But ALLE, until the end of the day I conk out on the couch. I don’t have the energy to walk to the bathroom and wash my face!”
I understand busy days! But if you have time to put makeup on, you need to make time to take it off. Sleeping in makeup not only stains nice pillowcases, but it’s a perfect medium for bacteria to throw a party. Do you want a bacteria jamboree in and around your pores? No you do not!
Instead of passing out in your foundation, think about how you can re-order little parts of your life to incorporate a face-washing routine. Do you doze off in front of the TV every night? Wash your face before you turn it on. Struggle to find the time to take your makeup off? They make awesome cleansing wipes now that remove everything in like 10 seconds. Hate washing your face in the sink? Take a shower and wash it, then.
But seriously. No more sleeping in your makeup in 2015!
2. Find An Exercise You Love And Do It Regularly
This is not about losing weight or looking like a Victoria’s Secret Angel. This is about long-term health maintenance. You only get the one body, so it’s important to keep it match fit (however you define that). Regular exercise helps manage and prevent certain chronic health conditions, maintains good joint health, keeps you happy, lowers stress, AND helps you sleep better.
I am not going to order you to join a gym, or lose/gain an arbitrary amount of weight. That's unhelpful. Instead, think in terms of what you want to accomplish, fitness-wise, by the end of the year. Do you want to be able to do 20 push-ups? Do you want to run a 5K? Set yourself goals, and then set yourself mini-goals along the way so that you can achieve them. Me, I'm working on my push-ups and my full splits this year. Strong AND flexible in 2015!
3. Defeat Your Product Fears
Almost everyone is intimidated by one beauty product. For me, it was loose pigments and orange lipstick. But I made a determined effort to get over those this year, and I’m so glad that I did. I was missing out on so much!
But no more.
What are you scared of? Bright colors? Different textures? Are you worried about calling attention to specific features? Do you think that you can’t pull something off? Well, yes you can! You can wear and look any way that you like. All you need is confidence in yourself and good execution, and the beauty world is your oyster.
4. Resolve To Learn To Do One New Thing Really Well
Have you always struggled with liquid eyeliner? How about blending eye shadow like a pro? This is the year you’re going to learn. Promise yourself that you are going to really commit to learning--that you’re going to practice and mess up and keep going until you have this technique down COLD. You will not give up. You will not give in to Brain Problems. This is genuinely the only way to learn.
And guess what? You’ll probably find that because you’ve learned how to do this ONE thing, OTHER things get easier, too. Beauty techniques are quite transferable this way!
5. Take A Hair Risk
You don’t have to know what it is yet (although maybe you do). But at some point this year, if you find yourself saying “Man, I really want to do this with my hair,” resolve that you will NOT let fear hold you back from doing it. If you’ve only ever had waist-length hair and you want a pixie cut, go for it. If you want neon pink lovely locks, knock yourself out. It’s YOUR hair, and just as long as you don’t get fired for it, YOU are the only person it needs to please.
6. Learn To Relax.
This one is for me, because I'm still not very good at it. I'm stressed out or worried almost all the time, which has taken its toll on my health--in 2014, I had pneumonia AND a stomach ulcer that were made worse by stress.
Stress produces cortisol, a total jerk of a hormone that gives you zits, dulls your skin and messes with your sleep. So in addition to feeling wretched, it’s also been messing with my prettiness. THIS WILL NOT STAND. Let’s all promise to manage our stress levels and take care of ourselves a little better in 2015. Because self-care is not a waste of time.
Like all the time. Dental surgery is THE WORST.
