It’s never too late!
My boyfriend is taking me--and Doug, of course--to a remote cabin this weekend for my birthday, where I assume we'll eat lots of food and drink lots of wine and possibly be murdered. (I watch too many scary movies.) I'm a little stressed out because I have a lot of work to do before we leave, and I also know that I'll have my hands full with Doug because he doesn't like being introduced to new places.
That's why I'm keeping my packing very minimal and streamlined for once. I managed to narrow it down to just five products, which is a near-miracle for me.
For makeup, I'm bringing Colorescience Skin Calming Face Primer SPF 20 and L'Occitane Pivoine Sublime Tinted Lip Balm in Rose Nude. The primer lends a bit of sun protection (although I doubt I'll need much in the woods) and also calms red skin and conceals it with a light tint.
For skincare, I have Simple Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Wipes to easily take off the tinted primer and lip balm before bed and Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Lotion for some nighttime hydration. (I could never neglect my perpetually dry skin.)
And of course I'm bringing my Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant, which helpfully doubles as perfume since it smells so great.
Are you impressed by my restraint? Me too! I guess when you've been with someone for more than five years, you don't care too much about them seeing you without your eyebrows drawn on. I just hope Doug doesn't judge me.
Now for your Comments of the Week!
1. Thanks for the nail growth tip for those of us who can't do acrylics, "traces of light"!
I've never had acrylics, and I'm not planning on getting any because I play guitar, BUT, for weak nails, I can only recommend taking a silica supplement. It's great for skin, hair, and nails, as well as your connective tissue, and it made a huge difference for me. My nails are usually brittle and weak and grow slowly, but with silica they grow so beautifully that I'm always a bit sad when I have to file them down because they get in the way of playing.
2. "Noa" had a great lipstick dupe observation.
This could not have come at a more perfect time. I just got out of a financial planning class and nearly cried because I realized that I have to seriously cut down on my beauty budget. Spot-on dupe: Revlon Lip Butter in Fig Jam is identical to Black Honey.
3. "Meghan" has some lip balm tips...
I'm very particular about lip balm, as my lips are THIRSTY and I find a lot of more popular lip balms aren't emollient enough to get the job done or contain ingredients that give me contact dermatitis (not cute). My nightly treatment is applying whatever oil I'm using on my skin to my lips (right now it's rosehip & jojoba) and then a very liberally coating of vaseline when I get into bed. I always wake up with baby soft lips. HOWEVER I have managed to find my HG lip balm: Yes to Coconuts lip balm. NOT the lip oil, which is nice, but not moisturizing enough. This lip balm is AMAZING and keeps my lips so soft. I am utterly in love. I have at least 3 right now...one in my makeup kit, one in my kitchen, and one in my purse. I can only find it at Target and it's sold out a lot but if you see it, definitely worth picking up.
4. "collier" has a great idea for cleaning makeup brushes:
Repurpose glazed ceramic candle jar with lid (clean thoroughly first, you don't want bits of wax in your brushes) with half a bar of Dr Bronner's all-natural soap (you can saw them in half with a serrated bread or steak knife if they're too big for your container). Wet brush, swirl around on soap, swirl on back of hand, rinse, repeat if necessary. Fast and easy, no mess, gentle on brushes, looks nice sitting out on counter, Dr B's soap is super cheap. Definitely want a ceramic container (or glass, though unless it's opaque or strongly colored glass, it'd look nasty pretty fast) -- it stays pretty damp in there, so metal could rust after a while.
- Do you have any fun plans for the weekend?
- Can we agree that remote cabins in the woods are prime spots for becoming a victim in a horror movie?
- If you could only bring five beauty products with you for a weekend away, what would they be?
