When I was 15, if I wasn't listening to Marilyn Manson, my headphones were blasting -- as they called it in 10 Things I Hate About You -- "angry girl music of the indie/rock persuasion." Bikini Kill, Hole, L7, 7 Year Bitch... It was the perfect soundtrack for me and my hormones.
One band I particularly loved was Lunachicks. Their lead singer, Theo Kogan, was such a babe, and she screamed into a mic like she really meant it. So you can imagine my delight when I found myself sitting opposite her at dinner a week ago. Theo's career has progressed and changed in the years since Lunachicks put down their instruments. She got married and had a baby, and these days, mostly focuses on make-up. Armour Beauty, her cosmetics company, specializes in gorgeous lip gloss wizardry, and -- somewhat predictably -- I am a huge fan.
Her personal style has changed a lot since the Lunachicks days. You're less likely to see her in leopard-print eye shadow and mega drag lashes. Today, Theo is all about gorgeous skin, cheekbones, a sleek cat's eye and fantastic lip gloss. (Spoiler alert: She is still a babe.)
Of course, I wanted to ask her approximately one trillion questions about make-up.
Who are you & what do you do?
I am Theo Kogan I am the owner and Chief Beauty Officer of Armour Beauty lip gloss and a makeup artist. I'm a singer (Lunachicks/Theo And The Skyscrapers), an actress, a model (don't do it as much these days) and mom.
What does a normal day look like for you?
It's anywhere from running out of the house with my makeup kit to do makeup on a shoot, or working on creating new shades of lip gloss and the business side of Armour Beauty, not to mention taking care of and having fun with my almost 2-year-old daughter.
Is NYFW crazy for you?
It's like the makeup Olympics! I actually really enjoy the insanity and the whirlwind pace. I also used to walk in fashion shows, so I really enjoy being on the other side of things. This year I am working on Betsey Johnson's show (among many others) and it's awesome because I walked the runway for her many times. Lunachicks played at CFDA when she won an award years ago so I am totally thrilled that it has gone full circle.
Describe your regular make-up look in a few words.
What do you use on your face?
Mario Badescu Rose SprayMV skincare rose oil, or Jurlique Calendula creamMake Up Forever Face & BodyMakeup Forever Aqua Eyes liquid linerL'Oreal Voluminous mascara or Benefit "They're Real" mascaraAnastasia blonde brow gelMineralize blush by MAC Cosmetics Any variety of Armour Lip Glosses, depending on my mood and outfit!
How can we get your look? Give us a step-by-step!
I spray with Mario Badescu Rose Facial Spray, apply eye cream and either a face oil or face cream. I use the Make Up For Ever Face and Body only where I need it so my whole face isn't covered in makeup. I use it more like a light concealer: under the eyes, corners of the nose and my forehead by my hairline. I apply it with a concealer brush and pat it in with fingertips so it blends and isn't streaky. You can also do this with a Beauty Blender, which is the pink egg shaped sponge that is reusable.
Gel the brows, make sure you dip the brush once for each brow or one will be lighter than the other! (If you need brow liner do that first and then the brow gel.) Curl the lashes with an eyelash curler. Mine is by MAC Cosmetics. Apply your mascara on the upper lashes only! I like a spidery lash, so sometimes I apply twice. Paint on the Aqua Eyes eyeliner in whatever shade you like right along the lash and do a small pointed wing a la Marilyn Monroe. Apply blush along the apple and up the cheekbone: the MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Skin Finish blush gives a really nice glowy look. Apply your Armor Beauty lip gloss in the color du jour, today it's Candy, an opaque lavender.
Do you have any make-up magic tricks?
I do my waterline by closing my eyes and pulling the pencil back and forth. I start at the inner eye by the nose and keep my eyes closed. I can do this without a mirror! It's not rocket science, but check out a color wheel to figure out what you need for your skin, such as for purple under-eye circles, use a peach tone concealer. Purple and orange are opposites therefore the peach will cancel out the dark purple circles. With red blemishes, use an olive or light green concealer, dot just the red and it will disappear.
What product have you recently discovered & loved?
Funny, I haven't done the pharmacy makeup run in a while and I just got one of Revlon's Just Bitten stain and balm colors and I think I like it a lot. Not sure if I can say love just yet, as I am not quick to fall.
