Put down your marsala lip liners, y’all. While new makeup trends are announced every season, skin care lovers like me miss out on the fun. Every now and then an ingredient blows up (I'm looking at you, argan oil), but usually the same-old same-old skin care prevails. I have a feeling though, that 2015 is the Year of Skin.

This year is going to introduce you to tons of exciting new ingredients to play with. Here are five skin care ingredients whose stars, I predict, will rise high this year.

AGAVE

It’s not just a hippie sweetener. With a chemical composition similar to honey, agave also acts as a humectant to attract moisture. Mix up equal parts agave nectar and yogurt for a soothing and hydrating face mask, or pick it up in a lip mask, sheet mask or even eye de-puffing patches.

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID

Meet the dark horse of the skin care acid world. Alpha Lipoic Acid, or ALA, is an enzyme that occurs naturally in the body’s cells and functions as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. But just because you produce some of it naturally doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also slather it on your skin for its skin calming and anti-aging benefits. Find it in tons of Perricone MD products or take it as a supplement.

YEAST FERMENT

Expect to see the crown jewel of Korean skin care all over this year. Fermented yeast packs peptide and amino acid power to address loads of concerns, from dullness to redness to signs of aging. Check out this article for some awesome imports you can pick up now, but I predict more yeasty formulas will be popping up stateside this year. (Like, remember when BB creams were hard to find?)

CERAMIDE

This ingredient has been readily available since the dawn of CeraVe, but it’s totally taking off this year. These lipids naturally form a barrier on top of your skin to keep moisture in and bacteria out. Sometimes when you overdo it with skin treatments, that barrier gets damaged and all hell breaks loose on your skin. Replenish your lipid layer with ceramide-rich serums from brands like Skin Inc. or Dr. Jart+.

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL

This acne-fighting ingredient is incredibly powerful at sucking up oil and impurities from the skin to reduce inflammation and redness of pimples, which is why you’ll find it in so many acne masks, like those from GlamGlow and Origins. This year, look for the ingredient to show up in your konjac sponges, blotting papers, and even cotton swabs.
