I basically called my mom for help. Except when I say mom, I mean an esthetician.
I have to apologize, because I'm about to start this article with a humblebrag.
I recently had my skin inspected by a dermatologist for sun damage, and she was very, very impressed. For someone my age, who grew up in a high school era rampant with tanning-bed obsession, I abstained and began slathering myself with SPF daily at the age of 15. And it shows. I have basically no sun damage, and the area where the skin doc was most impressed with was the skin around my eyes.
"It's like a baby's skin!" she remarked. "I can tell you wear sunglasses everyday."
And I do! My eyes are incredibly sensitive, and I wear shades even when it's overcast.
So, there's my brag. Phew. But I'm choosing to share that with good reason, though. You deserve to have healthy eye skin free of sun damage, too, and I'm here to provide you with my tried and true tips for achieving that goal.
Like I mentioned above, sunglasses with great UV protection are key. On a recent blindingly sunny day, I noticed tons of people out and about, sunglasses-free and squinting into the world around them. Not only is that horribly uncomfortable, it's putting unnecessary strain on your eyeballs and the skin around them.
Sun damage can negatively impact your eyesight (boo) and can cause darkness and wrinkles around the eyes, too (also, boo). Just as you want your sunscreen to have UVA and UVB protection, so should your specs—UV 400 is ideal. I usually wear my vintage Ray-Ban Wayfarer IIs. These ones are similar and sexy, with a classic look that will keep your eyes well protected, too.
Sunglasses are obviously a great place to start, but skincare is important, too. Just as you should be applying SPF all over every day to prevent sun damage and skin cancer, your eyes can (and should) receive specialized care, too.
After applying my usual facial SPF, I go in with my ring finger and tap on Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Circle Perfector SPF 30 all around my lower and upper lids. It's formulated with 100% mineral filters to protect the delicate skin around your eyes from the sun, and has activated C and licorice root to brighten dark spots and improve the appearance of tired-looking eyes. I love a product that multitasks!
I've also been loving SkinCeuticals AOX+ Eye Gel, an antioxidant serum-in-gel that has been formulated specifically for the eye area. With phloretin, vitamin C and ferulic acid in concentrations gentle enough for the eye, it helps not only prevent but repair photo damage to the eyes, and helps to prevent free radicals from damaging the skin. It also has caffeine, which is proven to help with puffiness (a major problem for me).
With my shades, my SPF and my antioxidants, I know my eyes will stay safe and healthy all summer—and year—long.
