I basically called my mom for help. Except when I say mom, I mean an esthetician.
It’s something I’ve been expecting for a long time. After all, it is inevitable. Like bumping into an ex when you’re looking like you’ve been dragged through a sewer canal in Southern India, or foiling that almost-perfect cat eye at the final wrist flick. It was due to happen.
I am aging.
Somewhere between my last birthday and a baby shower invite, I came to the shocking, life-altering realization that I am getting older. I mean, I knew I wasn’t going to be 23 forever (and I don’t want to be 23 forever) but considering all the Disney princesses, spinny-outy skirts and glitter I surround myself with, I’m surprised I age at all.
The worst came when I was primping in my boyfriend’s bathroom mirror and I spotted a single grey hair. I felt my heart drop to my knees.
“First, a grey hair, then grey pubic hair, and then soon, you’ll be bedazzling your own coffin before you die, Faz,” said my forward-thinking self.
Turns out it wasn’t a grey hair, it was just the gorgeous LA sun setting on my highlighted hair and I had a nervous breakdown because of it.
And so in light of my breakdown, I had a revelation: I needed to look into switching up my daily skincare regimen to accommodate anti-aging solutions. From what I already know, life only gets better with age and instead of fearing what’s to come, I might as well embrace it and age gracefully, as my mother is doing.
I should have done this sooner, but, well... I haven’t. I’ve had dark under-eye rings and lines under my eyes for as long as I can remember. It’s hereditary, and while I can’t do much with that, I can prevent worse things from happening to my eye area.
I purchased the Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex, and after about three weeks of twice daily usage, I've actually noticed that the lines under my eyes are diminishing. The formula is light and can be used under makeup. Winner!
My daily routine involves washing my face twice a day with Dermalogica Ultra Calming cleanser, but only once a day with my Clarisonic. If it’s during the day, I’ll put on some sunscreen, but if I’m going to bed, I pat on Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate.
I definitely could use more moisture on face, so on top of the little I do to my face daily, I’ve added Dermalogica’s Barrier Repair (yes, I worship Dermalogica).
I’m also planning to go to my La Mer facialist once every two months, as opposed to going when my skin freaks out on me.
What’s going into my body is just as important when it comes to aging gracefully. Since I spend most of my time in Singapore and Los Angeles, my skin is constantly exposed to stressors like the sun and pollution. I have since quit my morning coffee and replaced it with green tea and started a vitamin-popping habit with ones prescribed by my doctor.
Some supplements that have anti-aging benefits include vitamin C, vitamin E, niacinamide, and alpha lipoic acid. I know supplements are easily available over-the-counter, but I’m a firm believer in letting experts do their work instead of pretending I’m one, so I always think you should see your doctor and have them recommend you stuff instead of blindly figuring it out on your own.
I love going to the doctor. I spend time before my appointment thinking of questions to ask and then listen, all googly-eyed as all the beauty of science is spilled out in front of me, even when my legs are almost spread eagle, with said doctor poking around in my lady parts.
One of the things I’ve learned about from asking a ton of questions: retinoids. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that unclog pores, boost collagen to reduce fine lines, and speed cell turnover to even out discoloration and smoothen the skin.
While prescription formulas are the most effective, you can also get an over-the-counter retinoid, retinol, in beauty stores to help discoloration and improve lines. Dr Dennis Gross Ferulic Acid + Retinol Brightening Solution is a great product you can use as a daily as an all-over treatment or for specific area.
