My first serious crush was on a dude who was the only straight ballet dancer I'd yet to encounter during my nascent ballet career. He was handsome, he was talented, and he smelled of Yves Saint Laurent's Kouros. When I finally worked up the nerve to ask him what it was, he told me a story about a "wild ballet party" (ha!), and how in his drunken stupor, he mistook the flask-shaped bottle for an actual flask, but caught himself before ingesting it (crazy!), and it became his signature fragrance.

Eventually, I would discover that the Kouros was the only interesting thing about him (well, that, and the seemingly endless supply of muscle relaxers that he was very keen on supplying to young ballerinas). But to this day, if I catch a whiff of it, my knees get a little weak.

Whether they're still in my life, or we've fallen out of love or friendship, I always have strong feelings for a person's fragrance. To wit: My oldest, dearest friend will always be Trésor. My nemesis will always be Issey Miyake L'eau d'Issey. My poor judgement will always be Calvin Klein Eternity for Men. My smartest decision will always be Terre d'Hermès.

And right now, I have feelings for Francis Kurkdjian's À la rose, his newest scent, a truly beautiful fresh, zesty, rose-y, rose. I happened to smell it at a time when I got some sad news about someone who has since passed away, and the scent is just a marker of that time. À la rose doesn't make me sad; it's a sweet reminder of a sweet soul who taught me the importance of stopping to smell the roses, real or bottled.

OK--you take it from here:

  • What scents do you equate with people?
  • What scent are you wearing right now or are you dying to try?
  • What are you doing for Valentine's Day tomorrow? Care? Don't care?

Or, you know, talk about whatever you like. It's a love-fest in this week's Open Thread!
