Since I'm a visual person I hardly ever remember the album title but I just remember what the album art looks like.
I know. You're all saying, “How the hell do you accidently buy a teal mascara?”
Well, my friends, it’s actually quite easy.
I was taking a stroll through the cosmetic section of my corner drugstore where I saw a display of Quo Pump Up The Volume mascara for $7.50. This is pretty sweet mascara--a Canadian exclusive!--that usually sells for about $22. So I picked one up and threw it in my basket.
“I’m essentially saving money spending so little on good mascara,” I thought to myself proudly.
When I got it home, I excitedly unwrapped the package (new makeup gives me a natural high) pulled the brush out of the tube, and... it was bright blue.
Now the sale price made so much sense! I can’t take it back because it is out of its packaging, so I am determined to make it work by channeling ‘90s.
I made sure to get a solid ‘90s Songza playlist spinning. I let all my insecurities slip away as I was transported back to the time of plastic jackets, Dep gel and baby blue lipstick.
I started with my regular eye shadow base of MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study. Most days I just wear this and eyeliner, but it also helps hold and keep eyeshadow shimmery when I do decide to wear it.
After that, I added a layer of this Sephora Colorful Eyeshadow in Cosmic Trip. I layered it on with my finger so it was nice and bright.
I highlighted the crease of my eye with MAC Sub Blonde Eyeshadow with a rounded smudge brush. This is my favorite eyeshadow for summer, but this particular shade is discontinued because it was a limited run--but can be found on eBay if need be. However, MAC has a similar shade called Chrome Yellow that will have the same effect, if not brighter.
Next, I used my Gold Dust Party Powder from a Passion Party (do you have those in the US or are Passion Parties a Canadian thing?). I like to think of it as classy body glitter, if there is such a thing. You have to be really careful with this stuff because it has a tendency to go EVERYWHERE. I used a thick eye makeup brush to dab a bit under my eyes and under my brows to add a bit more sparkle. Go ahead and throw a bit on your arms, legs and chest while you’re at it!
Time to get cray, guys! I applied that teal mascara like there was no tomorrow! It lives up to its name, lengthening and thickening eyelashes with each coat. However, the color is not too in-your-face. It is more a fun subtle hint of blue.
I think blue and orange are the quintessential 90s color combo, so I tried out Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Rendezvous with some gloss over top.
I must admit that I had a lot of fun with this look. I even wore it out for a birthday party this past weekend. The ‘90s homage was totally appreciated and entirely acceptable because we ended up having a Space Jam dance party.
Have you ever made a startling makeup purchase? Did you make it work for you, or did it just sit in the bottom of your makeup drawer?
