Since I'm a visual person I hardly ever remember the album title but I just remember what the album art looks like.
As you likely know, Prince passed away last week. When the news broke, my article about pastel pink makeup had just gone up, and commenter "Noa" asked me to pay a purple tribute.
I thought that was very fitting. I've grown up around Prince's music, and "Purple Rain" is my favorite song in the world. He's always been a big inspiration to me.
These are the purple products I used:
- Kiko Moon Shadow Water Infused Eyeshadow in Attractive Plum
- Urban Decay Vice4
- Urban Decay Naked3
- Catrice Kohl Kajal in Purple Du Soleil
- NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cottage Cheese
- MAC Mineralize Eyeshadow in Time To Tango (limited-edition from their Tropical Taboo collection)
- Essence Crystal Eyeliner in Rosy Rush
- Illamasqua Lipstick in ESP
- MAC Lipstick in Heroine
First I primed my eyelids as usual. In my crease I applied Limit and Nooner to create the illusion of bigger eyes.
On the inner and outer third of the lid, I applied Attractive Plum. This is a cream eyeshadow in a lovely purple shade, and it contains lots of pink micro-glitter. I used this cream shadow as a base for Beat Down (together they created a good shade of purple) so I applied that on top of it.
Then I used my MAC 217 brush to blend everything out (leaving the middle of the lid exposed).
On to the middle of the lid. I applied 1985 around the edges of Beat Down, still leaving a bit in the middle exposed.
In the middle, I applied Time To Tango on a base of the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cottage Cheese. The eyeshadow is super-sparkly, so using a sticky base is always a good idea.
On the edges of 1985 and the glitter eyeshadow, I applied the Essence Crystal Liner in Rosy Rush. This is a gold/pink duochrome glitter eyeliner, and it created a nice transition between the colors.
In the inner corner I applied Harlot.
Then I lined my waterline with the Purple Du Soleil eye kohl. I also applied some of Beat Down on top and around the lower lash line for a smoky effect.
After that, I applied mascara and fake eyelashes to complete the look.
To complement the purple tones of the makeup, I went for peach tones on the face and I applied a light contour. I'm applying my Makeup Revolution Peach Lights highlighter here.
To line my lips, I used the same purple eye kohl that I had just used on my eyes. I actually bought that one as a lip liner, and usually use it for that. On top of tha,t I applied MAC's Heroine and Illamasqua's ESP lipsticks. Together, they created the perfect purple lip combo.
And this is the finished look. It's very intensely purple, but that was kind of what I was going for. You could also replace the lipstick with a subtle peach color — that would also work really well, letting your purple eye look stand out.

- Do you have a signature color people will always associate with you?
