I Was Obsessed With These Beauty Products in High School—and I Still Am

I'm revisiting some products I was obsessed with as a teen.

High school Sam was quite a bit different than the one you’re used to seeing here on xoVain. I still had my dark sense of humour and love for Kevin Smith movies, but I was significantly more self-conscious and lacking my signature bleached out hair/red lipstick combo.

In suburbia, before online shopping was popular, everything was limited, especially access to decent clothing and beauty stores. My only real escape was a two-hour commute downtown and a quick visit to Sephora, where I could peruse the walls of luxury beauty goods. I imagined a life where I could be free to try out the craziest, fanciest makeup looks day to day without being harassed by kids decked out in Abercrombie and Hollister.

ANYWAY. I’m on a super nostalgic tip lately and wanted to go dig up some of the products that got me through those formative years—the small tokens from the city that kept me going while stuck in such a boring place. Here’s how they stacked up!

Benefit BADgal Lash Mascara & BADgal Liner Waterproof

I revisited this liner/mascara combo recently, and I have to say, BADgal Lash Mascara is still as awesome as I remember. The BADgal liner? Maybe teenage me had the patience for pencil liners, but with the defined cat eye I rock these days, I just don’t have the patience. I’m ride or die for liquid liners now.

Sorry, pencils. I still love you, but my shaky hands don’t.

DuWop Lip Venom

I went through so many tubes of Lip Venom in high school! I squandered my money and would purchase one after another.

My devotion to this slightly painful lip gloss never wavered... until they stopped carrying it at Sephora, which, at the time, was my only real connection to the beauty world. Rediscovering this has been awesome, sorta intense (seriously, I must have turned into a wuss over the years because this stuff is HOT), but awesome none the less.

Demeter Sprays

At 17, Sugar Cookie and Sex on the Beach were my go-to Demeter sprays. I think what really drew me to Demeter was how outlandish and accurate their scents were. I remember a friend of mine always wanting to buy their Funeral Home scent, probably out of morbid curiosity.

Demeter was THE original niche perfume of my teenage years, and their catalog has only expanded. I’m seriously thinking about stocking up on their Grass scent for miserable winter days. In the years since Sex on the Beach, my palate has expanded to the more decadent scents offered. These days I’m super into Bonfire layered with Marshmallow, Waffles and Caramel. Yum!

Philosophy Bubble Baths

I have vivid memories of walking through Sephora and smelling every last one of the Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath scents. As a girl with gourmand tastes, I always opted for something with a rich, sweet scent. I’m talking Vanilla Birthday Cake, Pumpkin Pie, French Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Lemon Angel Food; to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever purchased one with a light, fruity base. Not much has changed there. I mean, duh, I’ve got Fresh Cream on hand right now.

Philosophy will forever stand out to me as the brand carrying giant bottles of dreamy-smelling liquid that made my bubble baths smell fancy and grown-up. These sultry little concoctions still swirl around in my bath water and will forever hold a place in my heart. I swear I’m going to stock up on eggnog again once the season rolls around—mark my words.

RIP DISCONTINUED OBSESSION: Jessica Simpson Dessert Beauty

You better believe I watched the hell out of Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica when it was running. Jessica Simpson has always been a harmless, sultry blonde, and who didn’t want to live vicariously through her in the mid '00s?

In 2004, at the height of her fame, she launched her line of edible beauty products, and 14-year-old me definitely jumped at the chance to own some questionably mature edible perfumes, body mousse and body shimmers. I think the label went down before I was even out of high school. Probably for the best?

  • What did you spend your pretty pennies on in high school?
  • Did you have questionable taste in edible beauty products too?
  • What are you still obsessed with years later?
