May Is Making Me Want to Finally Ditch My Dark Makeup

I've been wearing pops of bright blush and washes of pink on my lips. I've even started wearing my cat eye less and less.

As the weather is getting nicer and the days are getting longer, I've been seeing a trend in how I want to do my makeup. I'm typically a matte kind of girl. I like a strong cat eye and a bold liquid lip. I set all of my makeup in place with a powder so I look airbrushed all day. But something has been different recently. I've been loving a brighter and lighter look.

I've been wearing pops of bright blush and washes of pink on my lips. I've even started wearing my cat eye less and less.

Here are two of my recent go-to spring looks that have been encouraging me to ditch the dark makeup and try something more on-trend for spring.

I started with the H&M Smokey Nudes Eyeshadow Palette on my eyes. Unlike most days, I didn't even prime my lids — I just went for it. Lately, I've been embracing the natural look I get at the end of the day when my makeup isn't perfectly on point.

I took the light matte purple shade and put it on the outer corner of my eye and in the crease, making sure to blend it so it was super-light and natural-looking.

Then I took the sparkly purply-silver shade and patted it all over my lid for a light, pretty effect. Finally, I took the matte white shade and blended that under my brow, making sure to blend everything together with my brush. After that, I was done with my eyes. It might be one of the fastest eye looks I've done in quite a while.

Next I applied the LORAC Color Source Buildable Blush in Spectra on the apples of my cheeks. It's a pretty bright pink, but because my eyes are so neutral I wanted to use this blush to add some warmth to my look.

Then I added what might be my favorite highlighter ever: Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder in Iridescent. This powder is so gorgeous on the high points of my face so I get that highlighted effect without looking like a ball of glitter. I used the Hourglass Ambient Strobe Light Sculptor sponge to apply it, which gives my cheeks just enough product and blends it perfectly, so I don't end up needing to wipe half of the powder off when I'm done.

To finish off this look, I grabbed my new favorite lip product, which is crazy because it's not a lipstick or even an opaque gloss. Smith & Cult The Tainted in Sweet Suite is an amazing, glossy balm that stains my lips so they always have a nice peachy tint throughout the day. It keeps my lips moisturized and stays on forever; plus, I love how it complements my natural, springy makeup. It's basically the opposite of my heavy, dark liquid lipsticks, and I love it.

Because I want a little extra pigment from time to time, I decided to include my new Beautycounter Lip Sheer in Coral as another option. It's bright, but not too much for days when I'm not wearing a ton of makeup.

The final look is glowy and definitely a departure from my typical dramatic matte look. I'm loving this for days when I just want to do my makeup quickly and run around without worrying about smudging my eyeliner or reapplying my lipstick.

For my second look, I went for a peachier eye with the Bobbi Brown Sterling Nights Eye Palette. It's filled with neutral shimmery shades that I can go natural or smoky with.

First I applied the shimmery champagne color through my crease and just made sure it was blended so I had a wash of color and not just a big sparkly streak across my lid.

I used the peachy-pink color all over my lid for a little extra color and the white highlight shade went under my brow next and I blended it all together just like I did with the first look.

Then I used my H&M Pressed Powder Blush in Golden Peach. This peach blush has just enough golden shimmer in it so I don't need a highlighter. It makes my cheeks look nice and cheery, and I love the way it blends into my skin.

Lastly, I added my new Treat Lipstick in Iconic. This is a creamy vibrant pink that gives my look the last bit of color it needs. It glides on smooth and keeps my lips feeling moisturized. I love it because I'm so used to wearing a ton of lipstick, so it feels comfortable, but it's also a step out of my usual routine because it's so bright.

  • Or are you more of a seasons-be-damned kind of makeup wearer?
