Since I'm a visual person I hardly ever remember the album title but I just remember what the album art looks like.
I can think of very few beauty products that have existed for my entire life. Most that come to mind are perfumes, and a few basic skincare products, like ChapStick and Pond's Cold Cream Cleanser. The only product I use—and have consistently used throughout my life—that's older than I am, though, is Clinique's Almost Lipstick in Black Honey.
To be clear, Black Honey has existed as a lip color since 1971, when it was introduced as a pot of gloss (above). It has been in its iconic Almost Lipstick format since 1989, a year before my mom let me start wearing lip gloss in middle school.
It was my second lip gloss, if I remember correctly. My first was CoverGirl LipSlicks (which have been reincarnated as Smoochies), and when my mother came home with a free gift-with-purchase from the Clinique counter one day, she let me have the Black Honey Almost Lipstick sample that came with it. It was the perfect color for a '90s tween or teen: a glossy, raisin-y shade that looks unique on everyone, and sheer enough—though buildable—to look youthfully appropriate.
But even though it was "youthfully appropriate" (I totally just quoted myself from a paragraph ago) and a super-'90s color, I haven't stopped wearing it. I've always had a tube of Black Honey—in middle school, high school, college, my twenties—and at 36, in 2015, it's still what I reach for when I don't want to wear much makeup but want a little color on my lips.
My 60-something mom keeps Black Honey on hand, too. And as long as Clinique keeps making it, I fully expect to be wearing it in my sixties as well, and beyond.
