Ken Paves' Dry Shampoo Is My New Favorite Walmart Buy

I tried a bunch of products from Ken Paves' affordable new hair care line, but the dry shampoo is my favorite.

You might know Ken Paves as the celebrity hairstylist for stars like Eva Longoria and Victoria Beckham. His new hair line, which debuts at Walmart this month, aims to bring that level of glamour to the everywoman. To that end, everything in the 18- product line is under $20. I tried six items and the dry shampoo (followed closely by the hair serum) emerged as my favorite.

The Ken Paves You Are Beautiful range is rather beautiful itself. The first thing I noticed was the gorgeous jewel-toned packaging. But the brand also boasts some pretty impressive claims about what's inside the bottles (and what's not). Formulated with essential oils and plant-based ingredients, all of the products are free of sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. They’re also gluten-free, cruelty-free, and vegan.

There’s no synthetic coloring or added fragrance, either, which is surprising because the products have a strong, masculine scent with a hint of citrus. For some of the spray products, like the dry shampoo and hairspray, it was too much. But for others, like the shampoo, conditioner, and serum, it added just the right amount of muskiness.

The fragrance might be the deciding factor for most people who try this line, because other than that there’s nothing to complain about. Every product worked great for my hair, which is thick and a little on the dry side.

Nourish & Hydrate Shampoo And Conditioner

Paves also has smoothing and volumizing shampoos and conditioners, but I’m more in need of hydration. The shampoo easily removed half a week’s worth of buildup from my hair without drying it out, and the conditioner felt thick and hydrating without weighing my hair down.

Detangling Thermal Protectant Spray

I had my sister try this one out because she has very long, thick hair that gets tangled easily. She said it worked better than anything else she’s tried and promptly stole it from me. Too bad, because I really liked using it for its heat-protectant properties.

Repair & Nourish Shine Serum

I’m addicted to putting serums and oils in my hair, to the point that I sometimes go overboard and make it look greasy. (I try to keep it on my ends and not get it on my roots, but that’s not easy with short hair.) So I was excited to try this serum. I tried it on both damp and dry hair, and it made my frazzled hair shinier, sleeker, and easier to manage.

Firm Hold Hairspray

I’m not a big hairspray user, but I tried this one out and was pleasantly surprised. It has a strong but flexible hold, and no stickiness, crunchiness, or residue. I could still run my fingers through my hair. This has changed my mind about hair spray.

Dry Shampoo

I love dry shampoo as much as I love hair serums. This dry shampoo is a welcome addition to my collection. It didn’t leave any white residue and absorbed oil immediately.

After a few weeks, my hair is soft and shiny and definitely more manageable, despite the fact that it's in dire need of a cut.

I think everyone needs the serum and the dry shampoo to combat that too dry/too oily battle. The Detangling Thermal Protectant Spray is also pretty neat since you get two solutions in one product. Eventually I want to try the Thick Conditioning Mask and the Wax Pomade as well.

If you’re looking for natural hair products and you don’t mind strong fragrance, then check out the Ken Paves You Are Beautiful line.

  • What did you think? They're supposed to work for every hair type so I’m curious to hear if you think they managed it.
