I think that a lot of efforts to “empower” women (or whatever group) would be much more impactful if they were turned around on men. Like, I don’t need to be empowered. I need men to stop disempowering me.

It’s about common decency, which I think -- in the most Larry David-ish way possible -- does not receive enough thought and attention in our supposedly civilized world.
Fat women of color, women with guts, women with flat butts or flat chests, women with double chins -- these women are rarely represented by anyone, still.

Being around my mother must somehow trigger some chemical in my brain that deludes me into forgetting my own imperfections and forces me to nitpick at hers.
This album is a celebration of the marriage of privilege and intellectual movement that a lot of black women—particularly Southern, Christian black women of this mold, which I am also a part of—do not have access to and are not allowed to attain.

As new age-y as it sounds, I worked to become the person that I wanted to be and leaving feels a little bit like pulling a thread on an artfully woven sweater—why ruin a perfectly good, well-crafted thing?
After many years as a seasonal employee, I've developed a keen sense of what actually constitutes good manners while shopping. You probably don't have them. You're rude and annoying and you probably don’t even know it.
On television, in movies, in books and now with my dolls, black girls were always having to overcome crazy amounts of adversity with a quick wit and an even temper. These fictitious black girls seemed to be models of perfection without the requisite vulnerability to make them human.
